KESS, K-TAG, FLEX or Autotuner: which tool reads what?

OBD, bench and boot modes explained, plus which master tools support the most common Bosch, Delphi and Continental ECUs.

Read methods

  • OBD — through the diagnostic port; fastest, but not every ECU allows a full read.
  • Bench — ECU removed and powered on the desk; reads the full flash and EEPROM on most modern units.
  • Boot — the ECU is opened and put into boot mode; the most complete, used for locked processors.

Tool coverage at a glance

Every product page on ECUDOCK lists the tool and method the file was read with, so you know exactly what to expect before you buy.

Our recommendation

For workshops starting out, a bench-capable tool (Autotuner, FLEX, KESS3) covers the vast majority of EDC17 / MED17 / MD1 units.
